Questions about Globalwarming Awareness2007 and Climate Change

WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?

Globalwarming is a long term trend during which the average temperatures across the planet increase.

The earth goes through natural warming and cooling cycles and has done since it was created a little over 4.5 billion years ago, these natural cycles are Natural GlobalWarming.

In the last 200 years temperatures have been rising much faster than can be attributed to natural events and the view is that this unprecedented rise is caused by human activities, something called Anthropogenic GlobalWarming.

Often when people refer to global warming it’s actually anthropogenic globalwarming that they mean; to avoid confusion it’s important to distinguish and be awareness between the two.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLIMATE AND WEATHER?

Climate is based on long term trends over large areas such as entire states or countries, these trends are calculated by taking an average of the weather over many years (often 30 or more).

Weather is much more specific and applies to conditions in a given place at a given time. In short, climate is global and long term whereas weather is local and short term.

WILL WE ALL DIE BECAUSE OF GLOBAL WARMING?

Certainly not in the short term. The very worst case scenario is a global temperature rise of 11°C in the next couple of hundred years with some places locally experiencing a 20°C rise.
This would have massive implications and at least half the world’s population would have to relocate to areas where the heat was tolerable, water was available and crops could be grown.
This is extremely unlikely and the most detailed report into climate change predicts rises of between 1.8 and 4.0°C in the next hundred years.

WILL GLOBAL WARMING LEAD TO WARS?

As land, energy, water and other resources become scarcer some countries may resort to extreme measures, such as invasion, in an attempt to obtain them.
Some countries may develop a nuclear capability in order to defend themselves.
A secret US defence report suggests that war and anarchy could be a result of global warming.

It would seem prudent that steps be taken to offset or negate the effects of global warming long before resources became so scarce that countries have to resort to military action.

Quite what steps will be necessary remains to be seen, it maybe that geoengineering could intervene or that the combined will of the world could assist in population migration from the worst affected areas.

Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and other countries have already opened their doors to thousands of Pacific Islanders whose islands are being submerged below rising seas.
